Beloved Mother Part 2.5 Rewrite

So this is a slight rewrite to my ASL x Mother!Reader short series that I wrote. just a minor thing at the end that I’ve wanted to do for a while.

Word Count: 1510

     Three boys played in a field of flowers, a woman laughing and playing along with them. It was a perfectly sunny day and a picnic blanket was laid out underneath the shade of a tree, piled high with food as the family of four laughed and played.

     “Sabo, Ace, Luffy, come on! You can’t gang up on your mother like that.” you laughed as you suddenly found yourself dogpiled by three young boys.

     “How else are we supposed to beat you? You’re bigger than us!” Luffy whined, though the smile stayed on his face.

     “Moreover, you’re stronger than us!” Ace huffed, pouting, though the pout only lasted for a second before he was smiling again. A thought seemed to dawn on Sabo, his eyes widening for a moment.

     “Luffy, Ace run! It’s a-” all three boys suddenly found themselves unable to escape, wrapped in a large hug as you laughed.

     “Rule one, boys. Never trust the enemy!” you laughed, making sure to smother their cheeks in kisses, even as they ‘screamed’ for mercy and ‘tried to escape’.

     Two 10-year-old boys and a 7-year-old boy changed and grew, suddenly finding themselves at 14 and 11, allowing the three boys to turn the tide on their mother.

     “Attack! We’re bigger, older, and stronger now! She can’t escape!” Ace cried as he pounced on your legs. Luffy quickly grabbed your left arm while Sabo pinned your right, each boy holding your limbs down.

     “You’ve made one crucial mistake, boys.” you said with a winning grin.

     “But you’re pinned!” Luffy groaned, pouting as he stayed wrapped around your arm.

     “Yes, but you 3 were so busy pinning me that you failed to think about who’s going to exact your revenge.” you said with a chuckle, watching as the 3 boys looked at each other wide eyed before groaning and dropping their heads in defeat. The food piled on the blanket was a little less now, not that the boys noticed, too caught up in playing with their mother to think about the wonderful picnic that was supposed to await them. Luffy, Sabo, and Ace soon found themselves running around the field again, laughing and screaming as you chased them in an attempt to wrangle all three of them at once. They were older and taller now and despite your speed, holding one or two down while chasing a third was much, much harder. Once more, the brothers found themselves older, stronger, and taller. Ace and Sabo were now 17, their little brother now 14, the day Sabo and Ace would have originally left to become pirates, the day Ace did leave to become a pirate.

     “HAH! Pinned by two! Prepare for revenge!” Ace shouted, standing over you as Sabo and Luffy pinned you to the ground.

     “Ah, you have much to learn my beloved boys.” you said with a smile, shaking your head and confusing the boys. Luffy and Sabo looked at each other before glancing up at Ace, unsure of what you were talking about.

     “Not only had you failed to remember rule one to never trust the enemy, but in your haste to pin me, you failed to notice you didn’t protect your weak spots!” you quickly threw Sabo off, sending the boy flying into Ace before starting to tickle Luffy, the boy screeching and laughing. Once he was ‘clearly incapacitated’, you launched yourself at the older two.

     “Never trust your enemy, even if it seems you’ve won.” you laughed, tackling Ace and peppering his cheeks in motherly kisses, the boy screaming in ‘horror’ and ‘disgust’. Sabo was already running away, shouting about Ace and Luffy being on their own when he found himself face down in the flowers as you laughed from above him.

     “Good try, but you know you can’t outrun me.” you said, tickling him. Sabo and Luffy were always tickled, but Ace screamed against the kisses while loving them the entire time, needing the love that you showed the boy, he was more insecure than the other two. In the distance, under the tree, the food was almost gone as it sat, awaiting the four of them.

     Ace, Luffy, and Sabo found themselves a little older now, 20 and 17. Luffy’s rubber body was wrapped around you, pinning your arms to your sides while Ace held down your legs. Even as you struggled against them, you found yourself unable to escape. You stopped struggling after a moment before looking up at Sabo, the boy grinning with his arms crossed.

     “Don’t let up! We can’t trust the enemy! Luffy, careful of your ticklish spots. Ace, move a little to your right, she can still use her legs to pull you close!” Sabo commanded, the other two boys doing as Sabo requested.

     “You three have got me pretty good, not sure I can get out of this.” you said, testing Luffy’s grip once more.

     “Like we’re gonna believe you. You’re the strongest mom in the world! No one can truly take you down.” Luffy said, pouting. Despite his tight hold on you and his attempt to help keep you pinned, he was still the same old Luffy, the one who liked to snuggle into you before laying down for a nap. You soon found the boy rubbing his head against your arm, it wasn’t much, but it was the best he could do in this position. You laughed, looking over them.

     “You’re right not to trust me. Last lesson, don’t expect your opponent to play fair.” you said, wind suddenly swirling around you. Sabo shielded his eyes from the dust and dirt that kicked up while Ace and Luffy closed their eyes. Ace was soon blown off of your legs by the strong winds, not strong enough to hang on as he collided with his brother. The winds died down as you looked at Luffy who was still wrapped around you. You pouted and gave him the same puppy dog eyes they always gave you.

     “Mommy really wants cuddles.” you said, Luffy’s grip weakening. You knew Ace and Sabo were too busy picking themselves to tell their brother ‘no’. Luffy slowly unwrapped himself before pulling you into a hug, his face buried into your stomach. The two older boys huffed as they looked at their brother, knowing that the boy was weak against you. A little ways away, the picnic blanket lay under the tree, bare of food aside from a few crumbs on the plates.

     The sun was setting on two 21-year-old boys and an 18-year-old, their current ages. You stood, your back to them, an empty picnic basket over your arm, a familiar blanket placed on the top. The wind blew through your hair as the three boys stood side-by-side, staring at you.

     “But why do you have to leave? Why can’t we come with you?” Luffy asked, worry evident in his eyes.

     “It’s time for me to leave, I can’t stay forever.” you said with a sad smile, turning to face them.

     “Why? Why do you have to go? We need you here!”Sabo argued, his hands shaking.

     “That’s just the way it is. I have to leave, I’m not allowed to stay, I was only allowed one night, just until the food was gone.” you explained, holding up the picnic basket.

     “No! We… we ne- I need you! You were always there for me! Always telling me that what other people said about me was wrong, that I wasn’t trash! You can’t leave!” Ace shouted, hands balled into fists. He couldn’t lose you, not like this. All three boys loved you, but you were the only family aside from his brothers that he’d ever known. The only mother he’d ever known.

     “You don’t need me, I promise. You’ve all made so many friends, built crews, created a type of family. My sweet, sweet boys. I’m afraid I only have one thing left to teach you and that’s that sometimes you have to accept loss, even if you don’t want to. Sometimes things go wrong and they don’t end up how you’d like, but it’s okay. You’ll always have each other, be there to pick each other up, to help each other when you need it. It’s going to be okay. I’m… I’m sorry I have to leave, I know it’s not what you wanted, but at least this time we can say goodbye.” you said, tears brimming in your eyes. Gently, you pulled the picnic blanket from the basket, pulling the boys close to each other and wrapping the three of them together in it.

     “No! I don’t want to say goodbye!” Luffy whimpered.

     “You can’t go! Please, stay!” Sabo cried.

     “You can’t leave us! I can’t lose you!” Ace sobbed.

     “I have to. I love you all so, so much. Don’t ever forget that.” you said. A wind blew through the field and suddenly you were gone.

     Three boys jolted awake in three different locations, identical tears running down their faces, each covered in a section of a familiar picnic blanket.

Garp *holding baby Luffy*: Say hi Dadan... Luffy: H-hi... Dadan. Dadan: No, no. Who's godman baby is that? Garp: This is your son now. Okay, he needs someone to raise him. Dadan *pointing at Ace*: That one might be mine, since i grown attached to that boy.. It was one favour. Just cause it's a baby dosen't mean it belongs to me. Garp: He needs parents. Look at this cute face. Dadan: Do not point the cute baby at me, Garp. I did you one favour. I'm not a bloody nanny. *Toddler Ace holding Luffy*: Please, can we keep him?! Dadan: FIne. Last kid I take over.

ASL X MOTHER READER

Sabo finds out his mother death.

Two years ago, Sabo and Koala came back from their trip, and they're returning to Baltigo. When they went inside, they saw people running in the hallways.

Sabo doesn't know what's going on. "Oh, chief of staff! You came at the right time!"

"Come to the situation room now!"

"The Paramount War between the Navy and the whitebeard pirate has ended!" Everyone was reading about the outcome of the Summit War of Marineford.

"A kaiju was Paramount War?!" Everyone was shocked, "it says shin godzilla, use atomic breath, and blast the war before disappear!"

"The navy has a lot of casualties, too. Seems like it was a hard battle as expected."

"What about ivan-san?! Is she alright?!"

"It doesn't say she died or anything"

"The one who died in the war is..."

"(L/N)... (Y/N)..."

Sabo heart dropped when he heard that name.

"What?! (Y/N) the devil child?! Nobody heard from her!"

"Yeah, it said... she died from protecting fire fist ace and Straw Hat luffy."

"But more importantly, Dragon-san, look..."

"Is it true?! Is straw hat luffy your son?!"

"Hm? Yes, he is." Said dragon, everyone was shocked. Sabo picked up the newspaper and saw her face, her smiling face. Sabo eyes went wide, and he began to remember.

"I'm gonna become a pirate... and defeat others and become infamous! It'll be the only proof of my life! It doesn't matter if all people in the world reject me or despise me!"

Sabo started to remember ace voice.

"A boy would be the son of royal. But you, sabo. Shall be mine."

He remembers his mother voice. He's remembers how she sang him lullaby. Sabo slams the desk as he begins to tear up. "Sabo-kun, what's wrong?! You're acting strange!" Koala asks.

"I can't believe that Ace was Gold' Roger's son... and (Y/N) was his step mom..."

"It says that luffy was also (Y/N) stepmother..."

"Did you guys know?! They say Akainu punched a hole right through her body! (Y/N) was the government want a hands-on."

Sabo cries and cries when he remembers another memory.

"We can become brothers if we exchange this cup of sake!" Said ace.

"Brothers?! Really?!" Luffy asks.

"When we become pirates, we might not be on the same ship, but our brotherhood will always be with us! So, from now on, we're brothers!"

"Yeah!"

"Are you alright, sabo?!" Hack asks, sabo still tearing up, then he let out a scream, yelling.

"MAMA!!!!!"

"Sabo-kun!"

"Sabo!"

'Now I know... the one who died wasn't some unknown person... she wasn't just a threat in the pirate era that needed to be eliminated! Or be the world government slave!' Sabo thought, remembering all the memories of his mother.

"Sabo, welcome home!"

"(Y/N) is my... mother!"

A few years passed, and sabo went his mother grave, with much flowers and notes on them.

"I finally... managed to get here... mom." sabo put the flower down, then he took out some newspaper. " Look at this. Luffy started to make his way to become the king of the pirate again. And ace join in, too."

"It's so ironic. Since you've been gone, the old memories keep recurring to me vividly. I now belong to the Revolutionary Army."

"My colleague, ivankov, told me what happened in marineford in detail. And... how... you sacrifice yourself."

"I guess you, luffy, and Ace are mad at me." Sabo started to cry, "I couldn't go save you... I'm sorry! I wish... I wish I could've seen you again while you were alive! I'm gonna inherit your will!" He said.

"Luffy and ace is our family!" Sabo, stand up and walk out.

Now, sabo knows about his mother past and her home. His goal is to find her home before the government finds it.

Modern AU ASL brothers thought I had.

When it came to holidays after they all moved out, all of them usually spend things like Christmas, new years, Halloween and Easter with friends. They’re busy people they have lives and they wanna party every chance they get. But every year without fail. Ace and Luffy spend Mother’s Day at Dadan’s. They don’t usually do anything, they normally lay around her house, bug her, watch TV with her and annoy her enough every year to make her grateful she doesn’t live with them any more. But it’s her favourite day of the year.

The year Sabo came back and joined them on their Mother’s Day visit. Muting his phone to ignore his Bio mother. Dadan was a mess and they went out for the day. They were all a little wet in the eyes that year. It was the first time they were all home in a long, long time.

Little sunshine au

So in this au Sabo and Ace are 17 ( basically swapping places with luffy).

After Sabo turns 17 they start their journey , and decide to take their 6 year old brother with them.

( also ace already has his devil fruit, he doesn’t like using it much ; again I’ll explain later)

Garp knows he can’t stop them, it’s actually for the best since the marines have been looking into the island with rumors of a stretchy boy and strange phenomenon in the ocean pop up. He tells them not get into too much Trouble and to protect each other and luffy. He does give them his den den number just in case.

It’s also why they end up taking the fairie instead of sailing out themselves, at least until they can buy a decent ship. They’re money hidden away In their bags. They plan on heading to syrup to get a ship , since it’s known for making good ships.

( they had asked mom to not to help them unless absolutely necessary; one because it feels like cheating: two it draws suspicion. So that’s why don’t just ask her to help them across to the next island.)

One of the rules they came up with for luffy was not to use his devil fruit abilities unless he’s in danger or they say it’s okay. Second is no talking to mom or sea kings in front of others .

Of course they forgot to make rules about normal kid stuff like staying close to them.

And of course luffy being luffy ends up running off on his own. In his exploration he runs into a girl named nami.

Luffy isn’t sure why he’s drawn to her; but he just knows she’s in some kind of trouble and a friend is something everyone one needs when they’re in trouble.

Nami sees the adorable little kid with the straw hat that’s a bit to big for him , can tell he’s wandered away from his guardian: ( both are currently panicking because they literally just started they’re adventure ; literally an hour ago and they had lost Luffy already.) decided to keep an eye on him till the little ball of sunshine finds them.

She manages to keep the little guy in one place long enough for his big brothers to arrive . The two teens Rushing over worried out of they’re minds ( they had almost went as far as to Ask mom for help but she only gave them amused splashes )once they were sure he was okay Ace bonks him on the head for running off, Sabo gently explains that it’s dangerous to wander by himself.

Luffy says he wasn’t by himself he was with his friend nami .

They thank nami for looking after him. They actually end up talking a bit before alvida arrives and attacks the ship.

They get split up. Ace ending up with nami and Sabo with lufffy and eventually run into koby.

In the middle of the pirate attack Luffy had walked up to Coby , similar to how he felt drawn to nami earlier asked him , asking if he had any snacks , like there wasn’t a raid going on. Sabo ends up grabbing them both to find a place to hide.

Ace notices nami sneaking onto the enemy ship, because he is a thief himself so knows one when he’s sees one. Nami is of course upset about him fallowing her and ruining her plan, Ace just explains that luffy would be upset if his friend got hurt.

Nami tells him that she doesn’t need his help, just as one of the pirates finds them; who Ace easily takes care of.

He tells her she can keep what ever she finds as long as they help her to the next island.

So basically Ace helps her steal tons of treasure.I’m return she’ll help them get to the next island.

Meanwhile Sabo and luffy are hiding in storage with Koby.

Koby apologizes for getting Sabo and luffy in trouble.

Luffy just says he’s stupid for cowardly. ( as bluntly as any child would ; which is basically canon luffy so not much different them)

Sabo tries to be a bit more gentle in his approach. He understands why Koby would be afraid but he just needs some encouragement to be brave.

Luffy asks if he has a dream.

Koby admits admits he wants to be a marine one who can protect people.

Luffy then tells him his dream, to become pirate king.

Koby is surprised that the kid isn’t even afraid when he tells him how dangerous it is , and how calm his older brother is about it. But Luffys conviction even though he’s only six is inspiring to Coby.

When alvida finds them Coby finally has the courage to stand up to her, luffy cheering that he isn’t a coward anymore, though it’s short lived when the woman moves to hit him.

Sabo steps in to help, comendimh the kid for standing up to his captor.

Sabo asks Coby to keep an eye on luffy , taking his pipe and starts kicking ass.

At some point ace joins in, saying when they’re done they got a ride waiting for them. They proceed to beat the hell out of the pirates, Koby I’m awe at just how strong the two of them are. Several things end up on fire and people get tossed over board before they over hear that marines are nearby responding to the distress call.

With that they grap luffy and Coby heading for the getaway boat.

Nami is waiting in a decent sized life boat, with treasure and aces bag. The boys hop in together telling her they need to get going

She tries asking about Coby but ace tells her he’ll explain later cause marines will be there soon and they need to get out of there.

She of course yells at them not to order her around before shoving the paddle to them because they’re much stronger and can row faster than her!

Luffy is giggling while Coby holds him wondering what he just got himself into.

And that’s the first episode

I remember seeing stuff about the ASL brothers before I got deeper into one piece and I genuinely thought they were brothers with different dads but the same mom and that there was some woman out there that got pregnant by Roger,Dragon,and a noble and I was like good for you girl goddamn

Yeah my patience is kinda wearing thin regarding the One Piece fandom's obsession with applying some sort of nuclear family dynamic to any relationship they don't view as romantic (ie, 'they're just like brothers!', 'she is their mom!'). Like just let them be friends, or nakama, if you prefer. That's like the whole point of the series.

Mama!Sabo AU

Aka how Sabo became the mom of his alternate self™

So basically Sabo gets transported to the past, or atleast he thinks he did. He actually transported to an alternate dimension, which is really similar to his own but with tiny little differences.

Sabo is currently a woman cause he was undercover and Iva turned him into a woman before some shenanigans happen and Sabo gets yeeted to another world. At the start, he tries to find a way back home. He explores a bit, and realizes he's back in time thanks to a newspaper.

There he meets younger versions of himself and his brothers. Since Sabo is somewhere during the Wano Arc, he has already gotten his memories back and is now being really emotional when he sees Ace. Sabo then very patiently gets the alt!ASL brothers trust cause he wants to protect all of them. Yes even his younger self since he now sees the younger blond as his brother. He did tell them the truth, that he's the older version of Sabo (not true, but he doesn't know that), and he told them that cause he didn't want to lie to them.

Alt!Ace and alt!Sabo think he's gone crazy, only alt!Luffy believes him. But here's the thing. He's currently a woman, and a very sweet and nice one at that, so the alt!ASL brothers are more willing to trust him. Especially since our Sabo reminds them of Makino. Even if they still think that Sabo is a little crazy. Of course, Sabo eventually manages to convince alt!Ace and alt!Sabo that he is 'future' Sabo. So the four become close, so close that it seems like Sabo has always been a part of them.

Sabo feels responsible for them and acts like a complete mother hen. He does know not to smother them, but he does act like a good brother(mother) to the boys. Since he's a woman at the time, the boys can't help but think of Sabo as a mother figure, or as a big sister. He's just so sweet to them and is so. soft that they can't help but think that way

(it's cause Sabo feels guilty that Ace had to raise Luffy all by himself. So he's trying to make up for it by acting like a proper 'big brother' by raising them. He ends up being more of a mother hen)

As time goes on, alt!Ace and alt!Sabo find out that Sabo is still trying to find a way back to his 'timeline'. Neither of the two want this, and keep Sabo distracted, by acting clingy, which causes alt!Luffy to get clingy as well. Alt!ASL follow Sabo around like little ducklings, which is extremely adorable.

One day, Luffy calls Sabo mom. Which cause Sabo to tear up and become so happy. He didn't realize he was being a mom, but he doesn't mind that his little brother sees him as one. Really, he's just happy that Luffy sees him as a parental figure(also angst that Sabo thinks that he doesn't deserve this second chance to take care of his brothers, since he failed to do that in his own past). This starts a trend, where alt!Sabo and alt!Ace also start calling Sabo 'mom'. Sabo thinks their just joking around and still refers to himself as their 'oldest brother'.

Sabo's just so happy and absolutely loves his brothers, even when they call him mom. He's blissed out, and has completely forgotten to search for a way back home.

Alt!Ace and alt!Sabo are just happy that Sabo has stopped searching for a way back. They're never letting Sabo go, he's their mother now, and no one will take him away from them. Alt!Luffy is also just as selfish, wanting to keep Sabo in their 'timeline', but is totally fine with following Sabo back to his 'time' even if it breaks the whole timeline.

Alt!ASL one day bring Sabo to town with them. Sabo has been gathering information and mainly hid from everyone, so no one really knows who this strange but beautiful woman is. All they see is a woman with soft, curly hair parted in a similar way to Ace, with brown eyes similar to Ace. She's got blond hair, similar to Sabo, with rounded features like Luffy and Sabo. And when she smiles, she smiles just like Luffy. Her skin was pale like porcelain, the only thing out of place being a horrible burn mark on her face that only made her look beautifully fierce.

The demon brats call her mom, bringing her place to place, and soon, introducing her to Makino. They overhear from the blond brat about her having amnesia, only recently gaining her memories and theories fly.

Who's your favorite?

I’m just. Just thinking about how the ASL brothers might have different feelings on Dadan and her hut.

Like for starters Ace. Dadan is the woman who raised him though let’s be real he probably heard every step of the way how she never wanted to, how he was a burden on her. That piled on with the whole Roger’s offspring never should have existed, probably never made for a good pairing. But the funny thing with children is. A part of them, especially when young and developing want to make their caretaker happy and so. Maybe that’s why Ace was so independent from a young age. Being out of the house and caring for yourself meant he wouldn’t be a burden. Meaning Dadan would be happy. Though being alone also means he doesn’t have to listen to her or the others talk behind his back either.

Then after the fires. I think it clicked in his and her head of what they mean to each other. After all. Dadan says these horrible things about him yet she saves him from the fire and Bluejam pirates. He’s heard her say all this terrible things since he could remember and he patches up and care for her wounds carrying her home. I think after the fires. Ace really registers that Dadan is safe. And that’s why after Sabo left he and Luffy didn’t build their forts far in the privacy of the forest but right at her side. Because she’s safe.

Then there’s Luffy. Unlike Ace, Luffy to some degree had a stabile home growing up with Makino. Yes the girl was busy and yes she never had time for Luffy. But her bar was always open to him and she would always be there caring for him. Luffy knew what security was. And he also knew security came in all shapes and sizes. After all the red haired pirates were scrappy drunkards that would pester, tease, bully and heckle him any chance they got. But they cared for Luffy and he knew it. Shanks lost his arm for Luffy to keep him safe. So the bandits behaviour probably never threw him off. But the fact they were BANDITS did. You can’t blame him. His first traumatic experience that was a big part in the shaping of his childhood was caused by bandits.

But every day he came home battered, beaten, muddied, bruised. And just like Makino they would al patch him up. And just like Shank’s crew, would tease torment and bully him. Luffy knew they were safe from day one, and really he probably doesn’t think of her as a mother but she is still definitely family. She when he left on his journey. The fact they were bandits to him just meant they weren’t as cool as pirates. But she was still the best damn bandit in the world.

And finally Sabo. He actually has very little interaction with Dadan throughout the whole flashback besides farting while she talks and sharing a meal. But honestly that quick ease around her made me think. For someone who had such shitty absentee parents and then raised himself on the streets for at least months maybe even years. He was so… trusting? Sure he’s ten, and ten year olds aren’t really that suspecting of the world yet. But of someone of the background, it strikes me as odd.

Do you think he had heard about Dadan from Ace? Like come on, preteens be preteens. Surly Ace has arrived whining about Dadan and her bandits and to Sabo, tales of fighting for each meal. Being literally thrown into a bath tub and her screeching at other bandits and things probably sounds crazy, surreal, like a dream. He’d never say he’s jealous of Ace. After all he knows Dadan isn’t the best but a ‘family’ that talks to you must have sounded amazing. Sabo fit right in at Dadan’s hut because this was the family he had always wanted. And even if for a little while he got to treasure.

How it starts

It’s a bit of a rant so it’s a lot.

Okay I’ll start with Makino

She knows about ace and Sabo. Garp would often stop by for food and alcohol before heading up the mountain to visit Ace. When ace was just about to turn 6 he asked for he help in finding a present for him. Makino inquired a bit more and learned that Garp left a child with mountain bandits. Worried about the boy she decided to tag along to help bring the supplies.

Ace of course was wary of the unfamiliar woman yelling at her to go away but Makino was patient ( lord knows she is if she raised luffy in the original canon) and a few more visits she managed to gain the boys trust.

After that Makino frequently visits , Dadan is more than happy with it as it brings food and booze but the brat seems to like her too. She also meets Sabo , Ace had forgotten something and managed to fallow ace to where they met up.

Eventually they start coming to the party bar , Makino had told them that if they want food they were more than welcome at her bar. They even bring her fresh meat already skinned and cut as thanks and sometimes some money and jewelry they stole. She can’t stop them from going to grey terminal but she can give them a place to come when they’re hurt or hungry.

Of course this also how the old marine finds out about Sabo earlier and claims the blond as his grandson on the spot.Something Sabo is both terrified ( because of what ace has told him)and happy ( because someone actually wants him)with.

It doesn’t take long after that to start referring to the boys as brothers / they do decide to make it official with sake later but that’s with Luffy/they live, play , train and steal together . Though they call each other friends they definitely feel it’s more than that.

Any way fast forward—

So when Ace and Sabo are ten , Garp calls asking for him to meet him at makino’s bar in few days. Dadan is with them because garp never calls ahead when visits nor does he ask them to meet anywhere outside the moutain.( she’s not the best foster mother in the world but she knows somethings up).

While waiting the boys are nervous, did someone find out about ace? Or was it Sabo’s father? They don’t know because Garp isn’t answering when they call, so they can only wait and grow more nervous.

So everyone is surprised when Garp arrives with an infant. Who introduced as his biological grandson luffy, Ace and Sabo’s new little brother.

Makino instantly takes the baby, no offense to Dadan ( the two women have become good friends over the years) but bandits aren’t ment for raising children. Dandan immediately refused to take the kid after Garp said he was his grandson, she’s already dealt with enough sleepless nights and dirty diapers so no thank you!

Ace notices the way Makino looks at the baby , love and care , thinking that the person who was kind to him won’t care about him anymore storms off. To many emotions to deal with so he needs so punch / kill something.

Sabo fallowing after him- mainly to make sure Ace doesn’t do anything extra stupid when he’s pissed but he’s also torn about the baby. When his brother / yes I know he’s adopted in canon but this isn’t canon it’s an au so he’s biological brother/ sterry was born everyone focused more on him especially when Sabo started going against being a noble. Back then it was fine since if his parents were more focused on Sterry he was able to get away . But know with people he actually cares about it’s different.

Makino wants to go after them but dadan tells her to let them go , but she does go to check on them.

( it’s while they’re gone that Garp asks Makino to stay and explains a bit more about Luffys mother)

The next few days / weeks the boys avoids Makino and the baby. Even when the woman makes the trip up the mountain , bringing luffy with her, they storms off. This of course upsets Makino and dadan has had enough of the boys making the young women upset.

It’s probably the few times( if not the first time) Dadan actually gets serious with Ace even going as far as to ground both boys Sabo tries to argue but the woman isn’t having it. Makino has enough to handle with luffy , she doesn’t need to deal with the two brats throwing a tantrum. So in a rare display of parental authority she tells them to go foosha apologize and that they’re not allowed to hunt go off to the woods , or grey terminal for 2 weeks. And does she get a rowdy angry strong brats to listen ? Easy she says she’ll Garp as a threat- ace knows she’s not bluffing last time she did that he was 7 causing all kinds of trouble until the Marine put him through training hell. The man takes any excuse to put them through marine training—. The other bandits keep a close eye on them so they can’t sneak off either.

So with guilty conscience they decided to head to foosha village for the majority of their punishment.

Makino is happy to see them, even if they only came because they were grounded.( she’s proud of Dadan , who called to inform her she might be seeing the brats in a day or two).

They apologize, sabo having the idea to bring flowers they picked along then way, ( this is also before ace starts learning manners so his his apology isn’t exactly proper but Makino understands him enough to know he’s genuinely sorry). She accepts the apology and makes them breakfast.

However before she can start someone comes in saying there’s a situation at the dock’s about her usual supply delivery.

Makino expected this , Garp had arranged something for her as compensation for taking luffy, so she would get better supplies, however that meant some one new would be there and the people on the docks were wary of new comers. If she didn’t sort it out soon a fight was going to start.

However she can’t leave luffy alone , she just put him down in the basket on the bar( the baby hated being alone and cried when ever she tried to leave him in another room.)

The only other people in the bar were ace and Sabo.

Noticing her dilemma Sabo offers that they can watch luffy for her. Ace is obviously not okay with that asking why he would offer that, Sabo says that they use it to help apologize.

Ace gets that but they don’t know anything about caring for a baby.

Sabo responds that he read a few books on taking care of babies, and rereading them after luffy arrived out of curiosity. So he can watch luffy even if ace is useless. Which ace takes offense to and the boys start arguing

While they’re arguing Makino thinks it over . She knows leaving two ten year olds in charge of an infant wasn’t the most responsible but she didn’t have much other options. She’s already had several complaints about Luffys crying( she felt awful knowing he was in distress) and she can’t bring him to the docks ; that would risk someone outside the village finding out about his heritage. The boy would try to get in the water — he’d given her a few heart attacks when he did it the first few times; the situation could get out of hand and she didn’t want him getting hurt.( or anyone else in his mother’s protective wrath)

So She accepts the offer She explains that it shouldn’t be long , 30 minutes at most.

All they have to do is watch him , she just changed his diaper and if he wakes up and starts to cry she’s has a bottle prepped and instructions in the kitchen if he’s hungry.

So she leaves leaving them and luffy,

For several minutes it’s quite , and the boys think it’ll be fine and that Makino was worried for nothing.

But them luffy wakes up a few minutes later and starts crying they start panicking. Ace covering his ears yelling at Sabo to do something, the blonde tries to rock the baby back to sleep but that does work. Then he remembers the bottle and the instructions Makino left. So he tells ace to watch him while he makes a bottle or two , leaving ace to watch him.

Ace is of course not happy about being left with the crying baby but Sabo is already gone so he’s stuck babysitting.

Eventually he can’t take the noise anymore so Ace goes over to the basket and glares at the baby telling it to shut up. The baby stops for a moment opening his eyes to look at the new person talking to him.

Ace is surprised by how bright and warm the infants eyes are. Looking at him He fully expects the baby to start crying again.( after all he’s monster)

But instead the baby smiling, a bright and happy one ,giggling. The boys laughter is a wonderous warm sound that makes ace heart swell.

Ace is taken aback by that. Why was the baby so happy to see him? He’d never seen anyone, other than Sabo, to genuinely happy to see him . (Even Makino was kind but she was a bit hesitant to approach him when Ace yelled at her go away; he’s glad she didn’t).

He realized he never actually got a good look at the baby before. He looked so small and fragile , vulnerable. Ace could easily crush him, he’d crushed many animals and adults. Yet the baby , luffy , wasn’t afraid of him. Instead he was eagerly reaching for him.

Ace reached out his hand to touch him , tiny soft hands wrapping around his finger in surprisingly strong grip.

Sabo came rushing back with the bottle surprised to see his best friend staring at the baby with fascination. ( a warm look he’d never thought he’d see on his friends face)

He doesn’t even pull away when luffy starts putting his finger in his mouth. Though he takes that as sighn that he’s definitely hungry.

Seeing Ace’s new interest in the baby Sabo tells ace to pick him up so he can feed him. Ace panics because he doesn’t know how to and why does he have to?

He likes you so you get to feed him!

Knowing he can’t win an argument with Sabo he carfully picks luffy up , realizing that he’s even smaller and breakable in his hands.

Sabo instructs ace on how to hold and feed luffy - the blonde while ace is internally nervous because while his strength allows him to securely hold luffy he could also easily crush him. Sabo actually finds it a little funny watching ace , who brave and confident, panic internally as he holds the baby like it’s a bomb.

But seeing luffy comfortable in his arms Ace relaxes and takes the bottle from Sabo.

Luffy ends up going through 3 bottles ( the note said more than one : Luffys still a D and a Monkey ) before he’s full.

Once he’s done with the bottle he starts whining. Ace panics thinking he did something wrong, Sabo takes him from ace , after taking his cravat off and using it as a rag putting it over his shoulder- mimicking what he’s seen Makino and nanny’s do after a feeding a baby, pats him on the back . The baby burps , surprisingly load and earns a chuckle from boys , Sabo moves to hand him back over to ace.

Except the baby doesn’t want to leave the blonde hold gripping tightly to his shirt. Readjusting to get a better hold on the baby , luffy pats Sabo’s face with tiny hands giggling. Just like with Ace ; Sabo is surprised by how bright luffy is , all from being in Sabo’s arms.

I guess he likes you too. Ace teased,

By the time Makino gets back the boys are completely smitten by the baby. They don’t even leave at night because luffy started to cry when they started to head back.

They spend the next few day’s learning how to take care of luffy , diapers duty is not fun but they still do it, they don’t even go back to the moutain for a few days.

However they’ve noticed something odd , Makino takes luffy out before bedtime and comes back with a sound alseep luffy and her skirt wet. She tells them that walking on the beach helps put the baby to sleep.

Still something is right about that explaination so the boys fallow her one evening.

Makino goes to a more isolated part of the shore, far away from any villagers. She takes her shoes off and walks into the water until it’s at her calves.

To their shock she puts luffy , the vunrable tiny infant, in waves.

They rush over yelling , but it’s to late a wave had pulled luffy under.

Some how Makino is able to calm them down and points just a bit farther in.

Luffy is fine, floating safely , giggling as the waves gently rock him back and forth.

When they ask, Makino tells them Luffys mother would never hurt him.

Before they can ask what she’s talking about A wave of water comes over , unnatural I’m its movements , holding luffy out to Makino son’s asleep and yet completely dry. Makino takes him the water retreating back, but not before gently caressing boys check. The young women doesn’t give the boys any room to ask anything else’s before ushering them back to the bar, it’s already late and it’s bed time.

Once they’re back and luffy is tucked in for the night she answers what she can of they’re questions.

She explains to them that Luffys mother is ocean, that’s why she brings him here so she can rock luffy to sleep. She also explains how it could be dangerous if anyone found about it.

The boys promise to keep it a secret. After all luffy was they’re little brother after all.
